Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
