The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days Incarcerated

The ex-president of France will soon publish a book in the coming weeks titled Diary of a Prisoner, which recounts his time endured in custody.

This news came shortly after the former president left prison while his appeal proceeds the court ruling for criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to obtain presidential race money from the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he writes in one passage, indicating the account centers around his musings while in isolation rather than a broader observation on the packed and troubled correctional facilities in the country.

“Silence escapes me, not present in La Santé, where noise is endless commotion,” he adds. “The din is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, inner life is strengthened in prison.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, Sarkozy was present remotely from inside the facility, describing his time inside as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this ordeal bearable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It has an impact all who experience it because it’s gruelling.”

Historical Context

He, who led the nation for a five-year term, was the first ex-leader of an EU country and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

Reading Material

It is not certain did he manage to review and analyze the three books he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, where a wrongfully accused individual ends up incarcerated but escapes to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

Sarkozy was held in isolation for his own security in a space approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison in the city. Two bodyguards stayed in a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted just yogurt during his stay due to concerns prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Although he had access to cook for himself but he turned this down, as per accounts. Not known is if he will detail his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain daily while he was in prison, told the release hearing he would be safer released compared to inside. “There were menacing messages, listened to yells during nighttime and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

He entered custody last month after the judiciary gave him five years in prison for illegal collaboration related to a plan to acquire political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and another court case planned for the coming spring.
