Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed series coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Will the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
