Powerful cold-season winds brought walls down onto fragile shelters housing people displaced by war in Gaza, killing no fewer than four people. This tragedy highlights the perilous living conditions that persist after more than 24 months of devastating airstrikes and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Offers Little Relief from Severe Elements

While a ceasefire has been in effect since last fall, aid groups state that Palestinians do not have the adequate housing required to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the bodies, reported on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold overnight.

"The world has enabled us to experience death in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "It’s true the shelling may have paused for now, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

As per the medical center, 3 members of a single family — elderly a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre high wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a coastal area of the city. No fewer than five additional people were injured in the incident.

Family members on that day began removing the debris that had buried their loved ones and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and sanitation items across Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of Palestinians reside in improvised tents because their houses were reduced to ruins during the hostilities. Aid groups contend not enough building supplies are entering Gaza under the ceasefire.

Casualty Figures After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, says more than four hundred and forty people have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their remains brought to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The ministry maintains comprehensive fatality data that are seen as largely accurate by UN agencies and independent experts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, said on that day that no fewer than 100 minors under the age of 18 – sixty boys and 40 females – had been killed since the truce started because of armed actions, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, represented incidents where enough details had been compiled to warrant recording, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'explosions and shootings have decreased' during the truce, they have not stopped," Elder informed journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "So what the world now calls quiet would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million individuals has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and bad weather away while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial transitional shelter, which is badly needed during the colder season. This marks the 3rd cold season since the conflict between the state and the group started on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into southern Israel and killed around twelve hundred individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.
